Our Story

Over 30 years ago, a young John Curnow was working in the industry buying and selling wines of all varieties from all over the world.

He participated in one of the first of the wine industry's very early certificate courses at the then South Australian Institute of Technology, achieving a distinction in the final examination. Subsequently, and more recently he has completed the Small Winemakers program conducted as a further education experience to widen and update the knowledge previously gleaned.

He was long of the belief that the Barossa Valley in his home state of South Australia produced some of the best varietals to be had, and resultantly harbored the desire to aquire and develop his own brand and styles from the area.

However, a 20 year absence from the industry saw both John and his wife, Sue, involved in a corporate lifestyle which saw periods of residence in the USA, Czechoslavakia, Hungary and New Zealand thus delaying the realization of that desire until nearly a decade ago.

The vines, and wines, have developed under the Curnow's care to have reached a strong level of recognition, this has provided a world wide opportunity for the '1847' brand to be made available in many countries previously not part of the distribution network. Given the limited volumes of the wines, the number of countries to which the wine can be exported is limited, however, using the philosophy of only exporting to countries with the ability to embrace Fine Wine, the country distribution has been widened. Current distribution includes many European countries and North America, in addition of course to a strong Australian following.

In the mid nineties, John and Sue purchased a property at Rowland Flat and began their quest for wine perfection. An additional property purchased a couple of years later saw a holding that has a blend of very old and more recent vines and varietals.

The Curnows vision of brand '1847' being synonomous with Fine Quality Wine on the world stage, is very much at the forefront of all the activities and endeavours undertaken in support of the wines. Of course it's not a hard task when you're dealing with Fine Quality Wines of the '1847' Standard.
